How Does GM Super Cruise Work?

GM Super Cruise builds on the adaptive cruise control features shoppers can find in most Chevy and GMC models. It combines this feature with lane centering, driver attention monitoring, and following distance monitoring. It adds to these features: LiDAR mapping, GPS, radar, and a network of cameras that enable Super Cruise to function.

Is Super Cruise Fully Autonomous?

With continuous innovations from the engineers at GM, the future of fully autonomous vehicles isn’t far away. Features like lane change on-demand and trailering support will continue to reduce driver fatigue, improve safety, and improve the driving experience for GM owners. For the time being, Super Cruise still requires the active attention of a human driver.

How Does Lane Change On-Demand Work?

On models equipped with lane change on-demand, drivers simply engage the turning signal while using Super Cruise. Doing so activates the lane change feature, which scans the adjacent lane and completes the lane-change maneuver when it detects that it’s safe to do so.

What is Driver Attention Monitoring?

Taking a nap on a ten-hour drive would be nice, but Super Cruise still needs a driver who is alert and ready to take the wheel if issues should arise. Driver attention monitoring ensures that this happens. It uses a camera positioned in front of the driver’s seat to monitor and alert drivers if they become distracted. If the driver is distracted, it will issue three rounds of alerts before slowing down to a stop, disengaging Super Cruise, and connecting with OnStar.

What Do I Need to Use Super Cruise?

In addition to a vehicle equipped with Super Cruise hardware, drivers will also need an active subscription to OnStar Super Cruise. Make sure you are on a compatible road, that adaptive cruise control is on, and that your forward collision system is set to ALERT and BRAKE. Make sure all teen driver features are off, then follow the three steps below:

  1. Press the adaptive cruise control button on your steering wheel.
  2. Wait for the Super Cruise symbol to illuminate, and when it’s safe, press the button.
  3. The light bar on your steering wheel will turn green. At that point, it will be safe to remove your hands from the wheel and enjoy a semi-autonomous driving experience.

Where Can I Use Super Cruise?

GM’s network of compatible roadways has tripled since 2018, now reaching more than 200,000 miles. If you live in Ardmore, OK, you’ll be able to use your Super Cruise enabled vehicle on Interstate 35, Route 70, and parts of State Highway 775.
